The Senate has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Kwara North Senatorial District, calling on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to curb recurring attacks, kidnappings, and killings in the area.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Sadiq Umar during Wednesday’s plenary, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Lawmakers lamented the continued captivity of women and children abducted during the Woro massacre, repeated attacks on communities, and the recent burning of the palace of the Emir of Yashikira by suspected criminals.

Presenting the motion, Umar said insecurity in the district had escalated despite efforts by security agencies and local vigilante groups. He noted that residents across several communities had suffered killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property in recent months.

The senator revealed that many women and children abducted during the Woro massacre remain in captivity, leaving their families in distress and psychological trauma. He also decried attacks on traditional institutions, citing the invasion and destruction of the Emir of Yashikira’s palace, as well as the abduction of several members of the royal family.

According to him, communities in Patigi and Edu local government areas have continued to face repeated attacks, while criminals recently invaded Lafiagi Township, killing and abducting residents.

Umar attributed part of the security challenge to the vast and difficult terrain around the Kainji Lake axis, which he said provides safe havens for criminal groups operating across Kwara and neighbouring states.

While commending security agencies and community leaders for their efforts, he warned that failure to decisively tackle criminal activities in the region could further worsen the security crisis.

The senator also highlighted the poor state of roads in the district, noting that inadequate infrastructure was hampering security operations and economic activities.

Following deliberations, the Senate unanimously adopted the motion and urged the Federal Government to strengthen security architecture in Kwara North through the establishment of additional military bases, deployment of more personnel and equipment, and intensified operations against criminal elements.

Lawmakers also called on security agencies to secure the release of all abducted victims, rehabilitate critical road infrastructure, and provide humanitarian assistance to affected families and communities.

The Senate further mandated its relevant committees to engage stakeholders and report back within four weeks on efforts being made to address the security challenges. A minute of silence was observed in honour of those who lost their lives in the attacks, while condolences were extended to affected families and communities.
