The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on the Oyo State Government and security agencies to strengthen security measures in schools across the state following the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued after the union’s monthly congress held on Saturday at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, under the leadership of the council chairman, Akeem Abas.

The union commended the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, security agencies and Nigerians for their collective efforts, prayers and support that led to the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers.

While expressing relief over the victims’ safe return, the journalists urged the government to adopt more proactive measures to safeguard schools and further strengthen the state’s security architecture by equipping security agencies to respond swiftly to emerging threats.

The NUJ also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or movements in their communities to security agencies.

The congress cautioned against the politicisation of insecurity, condemning what it described as irresponsible comments by some political actors. It warned that such remarks could worsen tensions and urged journalists to remain professional and responsible in reporting security-related issues.

The union further expressed concern over the use of mobile phones by some petrol attendants while dispensing fuel, describing the practice as hazardous. It called on relevant authorities to enforce existing safety regulations at filling stations.

On public safety, the NUJ urged the Oyo State Government to investigate the recent violent clash in Ojoo, Akinyele Local Government Area, and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

It also drew attention to the deteriorating condition of the Eleyele-Ologuneru Bridge, describing it as a death trap that requires urgent rehabilitation.

The congress equally called on the state government to improve drainage systems and reinforce river banks across the state to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.

In addition, the union inaugurated a five-member committee to engage the management of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State over the ongoing industrial dispute at the state-owned media organisation.

The communiqué was signed by the Secretary of the NUJ Oyo State Council, Temidayo Adu, on behalf of the Communiqué Committee chaired by Temitope Ojoawo.
