Senate President Godswill Akpabio has threatened to sue the contractor responsible for renovating the National Assembly complex over persistent technical faults affecting the microphones in the Senate and House of Representatives chambers.
Akpabio made the remark during Wednesday’s plenary after several senators struggled to make contributions because of malfunctioning microphones.
Expressing his displeasure, the Senate President described the recurring technical glitches as an embarrassment to the National Assembly and Nigeria.
He noted that he had experienced a similar situation a day earlier while representing the Senate at the opening of the National Assembly Week in the House of Representatives.
According to Akpabio, the same contractor handled the renovation of both legislative chambers, resulting in similar technical problems.
He warned that the National Assembly would not hesitate to pursue legal action if the contractor failed to correct the defects.
Akpabio also urged lawmakers to take note of the repeated failures, saying any decision to sanction the contractor would be based on the recurring issues witnessed during plenary sessions.
He maintained that the legislature must ensure quality work on projects funded with public resources, stressing that the continued malfunction of the microphones was unacceptable and damaging to the image of the country’s parliament.
