Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to pray for peace and national prosperity as Christians and Muslims commence the Lenten and Ramadan seasons on Wednesday.
In separate messages addressed to both faith communities, the First Lady encouraged spiritual reflection and intercession for the country during the sacred periods.
In her Lenten message to Christians, she described the season as a time for spiritual renewal, introspection and a deeper walk with God, urging the faithful to emulate Christ’s example of love. She expressed hope that prayers, compassion and acts of kindness would strengthen relationships and deepen faith.
She also appealed to Nigerians to remember the nation in their supplications, praying for sustained peace and prosperity. She wished Christians a spiritually fulfilling Lenten season.
In a separate statement marking the commencement of Ramadan, Senator Tinubu congratulated Muslim faithful on the start of the holy month of fasting. She prayed that the period would bring peace, joy and spiritual fulfilment to families and the nation at large.
Encouraging Muslims to include Nigeria in their prayers, she asked that the month be used to seek greater unity, peace and national progress. She concluded with prayers for divine acceptance of supplications and forgiveness of sins, extending greetings of “Ramadan Kareem.”
Ramadan begins Wednesday following the sighting of the crescent moon in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Authorities in Saudi Arabia announced the development earlier in the day, while the Sultan of Sokoto confirmed late Tuesday night that fasting would commence across Nigeria. The month will last 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the next crescent moon.
Meanwhile, the Christian observance of Lent also starts Wednesday and is expected to conclude on April 2, 2026.
