Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Sokoto to express concern over the ongoing war in Iran.
The demonstrators marched through several areas of the city while security operatives closely monitored the procession to ensure order.
The protest reportedly started from the group’s meeting point in the metropolis and continued through parts of the city without any incident.
A security official who supervised the exercise disclosed that the group had earlier notified authorities about the planned demonstration, which led to the deployment of security personnel to maintain peace.
“They informed us about the protest in advance, and that is why security agents were deployed to monitor the situation,” the official said.
He added that the demonstration remained calm as participants moved through parts of the city to express their views.
The protest comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following military strikes reportedly involving the United States and Israel against Iran, a development that has escalated hostilities in the region and caused casualties across several countries.
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, which has a strong presence in northern Nigeria, has historically shown solidarity with Iran and other Shi’ite communities around the world.
