The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed a surveillance aircraft to support ongoing efforts to rescue teachers and pupils abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The development was disclosed by Oyo State Governor, , during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal , and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal .
According to the governor, the Air Force responded immediately after the abduction was reported by deploying an aerial surveillance platform to provide intelligence support for search-and-rescue operations.
Makinde said intelligence gathered from the surveillance missions has played a crucial role in tracking developments and coordinating efforts among security agencies working to secure the release of the victims.
He appealed to residents of the affected communities and the wider Oyo State populace to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies as rescue operations progress. The governor assured citizens that every available resource was being deployed to ensure the safe return of those abducted.
Makinde also commended the Nigerian Air Force and the Chief of the Air Staff for their prompt intervention, noting that the surveillance aircraft was made available while the state’s newly acquired aerial security assets are still being assembled at the NAF Base in Lagos.
He explained that the state government acquired the aerial platforms after consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to maintenance support, technical expertise, and pilot training. He expressed confidence that the assets would significantly strengthen security operations in Oyo State and neighboring areas once fully operational.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at securing the release of the abducted teachers and pupils. He emphasized that the service would continue collaborating with other security agencies to tackle security challenges and ensure the safety of lives and property.
Suleh further praised the Oyo State Government for its support of Nigerian Air Force projects and infrastructure development within the state.
The Air Force reiterated its commitment to working closely with relevant stakeholders to enhance security across the country.
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, kidnapping 39 students and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46. The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of schools and the growing threat of attacks on educational institutions in parts of Nigeria.
