Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately lift the suspension placed on the Amotekun Corps in the state, warning that the continued shutdown poses serious security risks.
The governor expressed concern that the increasing incidents of banditry and kidnapping in neighbouring Kwara State could spread into Osun if Amotekun offices remain sealed and unable to operate.
In a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke called on the police authorities to unseal the outfit’s offices to enable it to respond effectively to emerging security challenges, particularly in rural and border communities.
Reacting to a recent abduction in the Ora-Igbomina area, the governor said Osun’s security framework had been severely weakened by the absence of Amotekun, noting that its senior officers had remained in detention for months without trial.
Adeleke stressed that the corps had built considerable expertise in tackling security threats, especially in remote and border areas, adding that its prolonged suspension had created a vacuum now exploited by criminal elements.
He urged the Inspector-General to either arraign the detained Amotekun operatives over the alleged killings in Akinlalu community or release them, while insisting on the immediate reopening of all Amotekun offices in the state.
According to the governor, further delays could expose rural dwellers to heightened insecurity and allow criminal activities to escalate.
“I have decided to bring this issue to public attention following another kidnapping incident in Ora-Igbomina. The closure of Amotekun has left the people of Osun dangerously exposed,” Adeleke said.
“I call on the Inspector-General of Police to unseal the Amotekun offices and allow its operatives to resume protecting our communities. Those detained should either be charged to court or released. Any further delay will endanger the lives and safety of our people.”
Amotekun has been largely absent from Osun’s security operations since the alleged invasion of the Akinlalu community by some of its operatives, during which several residents were reportedly killed.
At least three persons lost their lives during the incident on September 30, 2025. Following the development, some Amotekun operatives, including the state commander, Adekunle Omoyele, were arrested and transferred to Abuja by the police.
