The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks the beginning of Ramadan 1447AH.
The declaration followed confirmed reports that the crescent moon was sighted on Tuesday, the 29th day of Sha’aban, in several parts of the country.
In a statement issued in Sokoto on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaid, the Sultan called on Muslims nationwide to commence fasting on Wednesday in line with Islamic teachings.
According to the statement, the council received verified reports of moon sightings from Islamic leaders across various regions, signalling the official start of the holy month.
The Sultan urged Muslims to dedicate the Ramadan period to fervent prayers, particularly for peace and stability, as parts of the country continue to grapple with insecurity. He also encouraged continued prayers for the nation’s leaders and overall progress.
Earlier on Tuesday, Saudi authorities similarly confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, declaring Wednesday as the first day of fasting in the kingdom.
