The Federal Government has advised Nigerians living in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries to take precautionary measures following rising military tensions in the region.

The warning follows reported airstrikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian targets, as well as retaliatory actions by Iran affecting parts of the Gulf.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA/PR/2026/21) in Abuja, the government urged Nigerian citizens to remain vigilant and strictly observe safety measures amid the evolving security situation.

The advisory outlined several key directives:

  • Heightened Vigilance: Nigerians are urged to stay alert and avoid areas around military bases, government facilities, and other sensitive locations that could become flashpoints.
  • Restricted Movement: Citizens should limit non-essential travel and steer clear of large gatherings or public demonstrations until stability is restored.
  • Compliance with Authorities: Full adherence to security guidelines issued by host governments is strongly recommended.
  • Stay Properly Informed: Nigerians are encouraged to rely on credible local and international news sources and disregard unverified reports.
  • Engage Nigerian Missions: The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and missions in countries including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia have been placed on alert to offer consular support and maintain communication with citizens.

The ministry stated that it is closely monitoring developments and will provide updates as necessary, reaffirming that the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a priority.

The Federal Government also appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate hostilities and embrace dialogue in the interest of regional and global peace.

The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
