President has announced the establishment of a special fund to support members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, including injured personnel and families of fallen soldiers, as part of activities marking his 74th birthday.
In a statement released on Sunday, the President said he had directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a dedicated account for the initiative. According to him, the fund is designed to provide assistance to military personnel wounded in active service and to dependents of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Tinubu also revealed that he would commit all his personal earnings since assuming office as the initial contribution to the fund. He explained that this gesture would serve as seed funding, complementing existing welfare and insurance provisions available to members of the Armed Forces.
Calling for broader support, the President urged state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the initiative once details of the account are made public.
He stressed the importance of recognising the sacrifices made by military personnel, noting that supporting them and their families is a responsibility rather than an act of charity.
The President reiterated that his birthday celebration would be low-key, in line with the country’s current challenges. He also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their goodwill messages, prayers, and continued support, which he said remain a source of encouragement for his administration.
