The Labour Party has officially elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its substantive National Chairman during its 2026 national elective convention held in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.
Usman, who previously served in an acting capacity, emerged alongside other members of the party’s National Working Committee. Among those elected were Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader. The leadership positions were filled using a consensus and affirmative voting approach.
Speaking at the convention, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, praised the organisers, particularly the Chairman of the National Congress and Convention Committee, Ginger Onwusibe, and the Secretary, Salisu Muhammad, for overseeing what he described as a credible process.
Otti congratulated the newly elected leaders and urged them to prepare for the responsibilities ahead. He emphasized the need for unity within the party, calling for reconciliation and inclusiveness to strengthen its structure.
He noted that party leaders must work towards ensuring a peaceful and transparent primary election process ahead of future campaigns, stressing that unity and numbers would be crucial to the party’s success.
In her acceptance speech, Usman expressed gratitude to party delegates for entrusting her with the leadership role. She pledged to justify their confidence and committed to strengthening the party.
She also acknowledged Governor Otti’s support, highlighting the significance of her emergence in a political space often dominated by men. Usman called for cooperation among party members, noting that building a strong political party requires collective effort.
