Nigeria’s women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, will take on either Sudan or Comoros in the qualifiers for the women’s football event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The fixture was confirmed following the Confederation of African Football’s qualification draw held in Cairo on Wednesday, which mapped out the route for African teams vying for Olympic spots.
As Africa’s most decorated women’s national team, Nigeria received a bye into the second round and will begin their campaign against the winner of the preliminary clash between Sudan and Comoros.
A total of 35 countries are participating in the qualification series, which will be played across five knockout rounds on a home-and-away basis. Only two African teams will secure tickets to the Olympics.
The six lowest-ranked teams, including Sudan and Comoros, will compete in the opening round scheduled for June 2026. Winners from that stage will progress to face top sides such as Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana in the second round.
The qualification tournament will continue with successive knockout rounds until the final stage determines Africa’s two representatives for Los Angeles 2028. The second round is slated for October 5–13, 2026, followed by the third round from February 23 to March 6, 2027. The fourth round will take place between October 4–12, 2027, while the final round is set for November 23 to December 4, 2027.
Nigeria will be looking to maintain their dominance on the continent and build on their recent return to Olympic football. The Falcons have previously competed at the Games in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and Paris 2024.
In the qualifiers for the Paris Olympics, Nigeria and Zambia claimed Africa’s two available slots.
The women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will feature 16 teams, including host nation United States, with the remaining places to be filled through continental qualification tournaments.
