The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the celebration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, , in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, .
According to the government, the declaration underscores its respect for the faith and spiritual values of millions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world observing the sacred Islamic festival.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful at home and in the diaspora, describing Eid-el-Kabir as a celebration that symbolises sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion toward humanity.
He urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and reflection, while seeking divine guidance for the nation in its quest for peace, security, and economic prosperity.
“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, said it had intensified security measures ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities across the North-East region.
In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the task force, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the command disclosed that comprehensive security arrangements had been put in place to ensure the safety of residents during the celebrations.
The task force noted that intelligence reports suggested that remnants of and the Islamic State West Africa Province could attempt isolated attacks during the festive period, prompting heightened vigilance by security operatives.
