The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of citizens who fought for and sustained democratic governance in the country.
The statement noted that Democracy Day serves as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and the collective efforts of Nigerians in strengthening democratic institutions and values.
The Federal Government also urged citizens to use the occasion to promote national unity, peace, and commitment to the nation’s continued development.
