Lagos State Governor, , has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector employees as part of measures to ease the rising cost of living.
The announcement was made on Friday during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, where the governor was represented by his deputy, . He explained that the additional payment would apply for the month of May.
According to him, the decision was taken in response to prevailing economic pressures, including high fuel costs and global economic challenges, with the aim of supporting workers during a difficult period.
Sanwo-Olu praised workers across for their role in driving development, noting that the state’s progress depends heavily on the dedication of teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans, and civil servants.
He also acknowledged ongoing concerns around housing and transportation, stating that the government is investing in affordable housing projects and expanding rail infrastructure to improve commuting and productivity. He added that the state’s rent-to-own housing scheme requires only a five per cent initial payment to make home ownership more accessible.
The governor further assured retirees of continued pension payments and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to engaging with organised labour.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, emphasised that a well-motivated workforce is key to efficient service delivery and sustainable growth.
