A heated debate erupted in the Nigerian Senate as former Edo State governor and current senator, , called for strong economic measures against South African interests in response to ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

Speaking during plenary, Oshiomhole condemned the persistent violence targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals in . He anchored his argument on Nigeria’s historical role in supporting the country’s liberation, particularly its contributions to ending .

The senator recalled Nigeria’s firm anti-apartheid stance under former Head of State , noting that the country once considered nationalising foreign assets linked to pro-apartheid governments. According to him, such bold actions reflected Nigeria’s willingness to bear economic costs in pursuit of justice and African unity.

His remarks come amid renewed reports of xenophobic violence in South Africa, where Nigerians have frequently been victims of attacks, business destruction, and, in some cases, loss of life. The situation has continued to strain relations between Africa’s two largest economies.

Oshiomhole expressed concern that Nigeria’s sacrifices for African solidarity are not being reciprocated, stressing the need for a reassessment of the country’s diplomatic approach. He also pointed to internal political pressures in South Africa, including rhetoric around foreign workers, as a factor influencing the government’s response to the crisis.

Defending Nigerians abroad, the senator dismissed claims that they are taking jobs from locals, explaining that many are engaged in trading and skilled work that contributes to the economy.

As part of his proposed response, Oshiomhole called for the nationalisation of , a major telecom operator in Nigeria. He argued that taking over the company would not only serve as economic retaliation but also create employment opportunities for Nigerians.

While the Senate has yet to take an official position, the debate highlights growing calls for decisive action. Lawmakers are expected to continue discussions, balancing diplomatic relations with the need to protect Nigerian citizens and interests abroad.
