The Edo State Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights has condemned the ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, describing the violence as a serious breach of human rights and a threat to continental unity.

In a statement issued by its Acting Coordinator General, Comrade Aghatise Raphael, the group expressed deep concern over the persistent killings, harassment, and destruction of property linked to the attacks. It described the situation as both alarming and unacceptable, noting that such acts undermine human dignity and the principles of Pan-African solidarity.

According to the coalition, the attacks contradict the shared values that bind African nations together, especially considering the historical support many countries, including Nigeria, offered South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle. The group said it was troubling that Africans are now being targeted in a country that once benefited from continental backing.

The coalition also criticized the pattern of mob violence, looting, and targeted assaults on foreign nationals, labeling the actions as criminal and inconsistent with civilized society. It stressed that these incidents violate global human rights standards, referencing Article 3 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life, liberty, and personal security.

While acknowledging previous condemnations of the attacks, the group expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of concrete action by authorities, warning that failure to hold perpetrators accountable encourages further violence.

The coalition called on the South African government to take immediate and visible steps to end the attacks and ensure the safety of all residents, regardless of nationality. It also urged security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible.

In addition, the group appealed to the Nigerian government to go beyond verbal condemnations by adopting firm diplomatic and legal measures to protect its citizens abroad. It further called on the African Union and the international community to step in and ensure justice for victims.

The statement highlighted the need for Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa to strengthen support systems and emergency responses for affected citizens.

Warning of wider consequences, the coalition cautioned that continued xenophobic violence could weaken Africa’s integration efforts, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade framework.

The group extended its condolences to victims and their families and advised Nigerians living in South Africa to remain law-abiding and cautious while diplomatic solutions are pursued.

Reaffirming its stance, the coalition pledged to continue advocating against injustice and human rights abuses, declaring that an attack on any African is an attack on the entire continent.
