Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday accused the United States of violating an already fragile ceasefire agreement in the southern province of Hormozgan over the last 48 hours.
The allegation followed claims by the US Central Command that American forces carried out strikes on missile sites and boats in southern Iran on Monday, accusing Iranian forces of attempting to deploy mines in the Gulf. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also claimed they opened fire on US aircraft allegedly trying to enter Iranian airspace.
In a statement, Tehran described the actions of the US military as “illegal and unjustified,” accusing Washington of committing a “gross violation” of the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region.
Iran further warned that it would not allow what it described as hostile actions to go unanswered, insisting it remained prepared to defend the country and its citizens.
The latest development comes as a high-level Iranian delegation is in Qatar for diplomatic talks aimed at finding a resolution to the conflict between both countries, which reportedly began on February 28.
The ceasefire tensions have continued to raise fears of renewed military escalation in the Gulf region.
