The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, saying Nigeria is “bleeding” from the devastating impact of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes that have claimed thousands of lives and displaced many communities.

The association made the statement on Sunday as Christians nationwide observed a special “Black Sunday” to honour victims of insecurity and show solidarity with families and communities affected by violence.

In a message to Christians, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the Church could no longer remain silent while innocent Nigerians continue to suffer attacks and live in fear.

“Today, we are not only mourning; we are speaking with one voice. Our nation is bleeding, and the Church cannot remain silent while innocent lives are lost and families live in fear,” Okoh stated.

According to him, the nationwide observance was dedicated to remembering the countless victims of insecurity, including women, men, children, farmers, students, clergy and entire communities whose lives have been disrupted by acts of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

CAN noted that the period of mourning coincided with the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations, stressing that democracy is founded on the principles of justice, the sanctity of human life, the rule of law and the protection of citizens.

The association maintained that safeguarding lives and property remains central to sustaining democracy, adding that there could be no greater tribute to those who fought for democratic governance than ensuring the security of all Nigerians.

Reaffirming the Christian belief in the value of human life, CAN expressed solidarity with bereaved families, displaced persons and communities traumatised by violent attacks. It also offered prayers for healing, comfort and justice for victims across the country.

The Christian body urged the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies and other relevant authorities, to take immediate and sustained action to tackle insecurity and protect citizens.

“The protection of citizens is a sacred responsibility entrusted to those in authority and must be treated with the utmost seriousness,” the association said.

CAN also praised the House of Representatives for passing the Community and State Policing Bill on June 11, 2026, describing the move as a positive step towards strengthening grassroots security and improving community participation in safeguarding lives and property.

The association expressed optimism that the Senate would expedite consideration of the bill, noting that state and community policing could enhance local responses to security threats and improve intelligence gathering.

In addition, CAN advised churches, Christian schools, hospitals, mission institutions and other faith-based organisations to adopt stronger security measures to protect worshippers, students, staff and facilities.

It called for improved security awareness, emergency preparedness, vigilance and collaboration with local security networks amid the prevailing threats across the country.

“While we trust in God’s protection, we must also exercise wisdom and prudence in protecting those under our care,” Archbishop Okoh said.

The association further encouraged Christians to remain united, continue praying for the nation and support victims of violence, while refusing to be intimidated by fear.

CAN also offered prayers for President Bola Tinubu and other leaders, asking God to grant them wisdom, courage and determination to address the nation’s security challenges and restore lasting peace and stability.
