Mozambique defensive midfielder Ricardo Guimarães has expressed confidence that the Mambas can spring a surprise against Nigeria by capitalising on what he described as the Super Eagles’ weaknesses when both sides meet in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on Monday.

Nigeria, who finished top of Group C with a flawless record of three wins from three matches, will remain at the Fez Stadium for the knockout encounter against Mozambique, who are making their first-ever appearance in the AFCON last 16.

The Mambas advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams following a dramatic 3–2 victory over Gabon in the group stage, despite earlier defeats to defending champions Ivory Coast and five-time winners Cameroon. They scored four goals and conceded five in what proved to be a challenging group.

Buoyed by their historic progress, Guimarães believes Mozambique are capable of causing an upset against the three-time African champions.

“We know Nigeria have a good team, but we also have our own strengths and we are working hard to beat them,” the midfielder said ahead of the encounter.

“Every team has weak points, and we have identified Nigeria’s. It’s a knockout match, and sometimes emotions can decide the game.

“Our unity as a team can make the difference. We are growing step by step. We have made history before, and we are making history again.”

Reports from Mozambique also indicate that the team has received strong backing from the country’s leadership. According to Jornal Notícias, President Daniel Francisco Chapo has promised an extraordinary bonus of 500,000 meticais (about ₦11.3m) to each player and member of the coaching crew if the Mambas defeat Nigeria and reach the quarter-finals.

Reacting to the incentive, the 30-year-old midfielder downplayed its significance, insisting the focus remains on the task at hand.

“Motivation is always important, but it’s nothing special. These things are usually defined already,” he added.

Monday’s fixture will mark the second AFCON meeting between both nations. Their first came at the 2010 tournament, where Nigeria secured a convincing 3–0 victory, with Peter Odemwingie scoring twice and Obafemi Martins adding the third.

Overall, Nigeria remain unbeaten in five previous meetings with Mozambique across all competitions, recording four wins and one draw.
