The Delta State Government has confirmed the arrest of 11 additional suspects linked to the sexual assault of women during the recent Ozoro festival.
In a statement shared on Saturday via its official X account, the government revealed that the arrests followed intensified police investigations into the incidents that occurred in Oramudu Quarters, Ozoro.
According to the statement, the breakthrough came after the Commissioner of Police directed the CP Special Assignment Team to carry out a thorough probe. The team reportedly examined video footage and gathered intelligence, leading to the apprehension of several suspects, including Samson Atukpodo, Steven Ovie, Ugbevo Samson, Afoke Akporobaro, Evidence Oguname, and six others.
The government stressed that the assaults were carried out by criminal elements who took advantage of the festival environment to commit acts of sexual violence. It emphasized that such actions do not represent any legitimate cultural practice.
Authorities also reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all individuals involved are identified and prosecuted. Victims and witnesses have been urged to come forward with relevant information, with assurances that their identities will be protected.
Earlier reports indicated that five individuals, including the community head and the chief organiser of the festival, had already been arrested in connection with the incident.
