South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has acknowledged that rising xenophobic tensions and anti-migrant sentiments in the country are harming South Africa’s reputation across Africa and affecting economic interests, including the livelihoods of local artists.

Speaking during a public broadcast, Kubayi admitted that South Africa is facing growing criticism from other African nations over its handling of migration-related issues. She said the government is actively engaging with businesses and stakeholders to reduce the impact of the backlash on South African interests abroad.

According to the minister, government agencies have been working with South African companies operating in other countries by providing support and consular assistance where they encounter challenges linked to the negative perception of South Africa.

Kubayi noted that the entertainment industry has also begun to feel the effects of the situation, revealing that many South African artists who depend on performances across Africa are experiencing cancellations of scheduled events.

She disclosed that one artist personally informed her that all of her bookings across the continent had been cancelled, resulting in a significant loss of income.

The minister stressed that the country’s image is being affected by the crisis and urged citizens to act responsibly. She maintained that concerns about illegal immigration should be addressed through lawful enforcement measures rather than hostility toward foreign nationals.

Kubayi said many African countries understand South Africa’s need to enforce immigration laws but expect authorities to ensure the safety and protection of migrants who are legally residing within the country.

She further warned that vigilantism and attacks against foreigners could worsen social divisions and undermine South Africa’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

According to her, xenophobic actions not only damage the country’s international standing but also threaten internal unity by creating tensions among different cultural and ethnic communities.

The minister called on communities to reject violence and discrimination, noting that such attacks often affect not only foreign nationals but also individuals who are targeted because of their language, appearance, or perceived origin.

Her comments come amid growing concern over renewed xenophobic attacks that have strained relations between South Africa and several African countries. Since the escalation of anti-migrant violence in April 2026, countries including Nigeria, Ghana and Malawi have reportedly evacuated hundreds of their citizens from South Africa.

The developments have sparked widespread debate across the continent, with many African leaders and civil society groups calling for stronger protection of migrants and improved cooperation among African nations.
