The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a waiver exempting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the party’s screening process ahead of its upcoming presidential primaries.
The decision allows the President to contest without appearing before a screening panel, as the NWC resolved to regard him as already screened in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The resolution was reached during the committee’s 188th meeting held on Wednesday, where members invoked provisions of Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv). These clauses empower the NWC to organise party primaries and grant waivers under special circumstances deemed to be in the party’s best interest.
In a statement issued after the meeting, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the move was influenced by the widespread endorsements and votes of confidence Tinubu has received from key party stakeholders. These include the Progressive Governors Forum, members and leadership of the National Assembly, as well as other party organs, particularly during the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, and subsequent statutory gatherings.
The party further argued that, as the incumbent President and leader of the APC who had already undergone screening before the 2022 presidential primaries, subjecting him to another screening exercise would be unnecessary and repetitive.
